What do we mean by that question? It can be asked in other ways: Could it be you are a Christian? Could it be you think you are a Christian? Could it be you could become a Christian?
To be a true Christian you have to be called “born again”. Of course a person cannot literally be born again if he or she is already alive! The Lord Jesus tells us that in the Bible. Read all about it in the Gospel of John, chapter 3. Being born again means you start a new life by faith in Christ – “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Corinthians 5.17).
God is a loving God, but the Bible says He hates sin and is angry with sinners every day. “Ah” you might say, “but my sins are not big sins like murder, adultery, stealing, really serious sins. My sins are ordinary small sins that everybody does all the time.”
You might think that God overlooks little sins, but He sets the standard so high, just one little sin condemns us and we are His enemies. We will eventually have to stand before Him on Judgment Day and be found guilty and sent to Hell. People laugh about Hell, they don’t believe in it and think that if they don’t believe it, it doesn’t exist. But it certainly does. If they get sent there, they will be there forever and ever, regretting they didn’t pay attention to things like you are reading just now.
So back to those questions:
1 Could it be you are a Christian, born again and leading a new life in Christ, sincerely trying with God’s help not to sin? If you have done those things and are upset that you are not very successful at being a Christian, that’s good! We’re all in the same boat, but that’s understandable. He promises that if we confess our sins to Him He will forgive us.
2 Could it be you think you are a Christian, but what you have just read makes you feel uneasy. Do you say “I thought I was a Christian, but am not so sure now”. If so, we would strongly urge you to seek God. How? Pray to Him. He says He listens and hears every prayer of the sinner who seeks Him in a humble and truly sorry way. Not just saying a little prayer, but really praying. Go on, do it now!
3 Could you become a Christian? Yes you could! But be warned. Some people say that if you become a Christian everything in life will be a breeze. No problems. Family relationships healed at a stroke. Business troubles all solved and so on. That is not the truth. Life can get even tougher than you thought possible. But, and it’s a big BUT. God also promises to come alongside and help you. It is not a matter of summoning up all the strength you have to put into it. You can’t go it alone. Many millions have already proved He is as good as His word.
